The Anderida Collective
Some say The Forest of Anderida is a very old name for the Weald of Kent in the South East of England.
The Weald in the mid '80s is where Jake Weekes, Graham Swan, Marcus Weekes and Nick Litherland under the name of Contraband first played in a live music scene, and is where the seeds of The Anderida Collective were first sown.
In 2016 the 4 members of Contraband reformed as “The Deadest Hour” to record a psychedelic album made of songs and jams recorded over three days; it felt like coming home, so we called the album Return to Anderida. Out of this came a new working partnership following our interests in promoting locally made rock, folk, Avant Garde, blues, boogie and rock n roll records, with the type of artistic freedom and emphasis on improvisation never today promoted by mainstream record labels or media. We also began exploring the educational and therapeutic qualities of this music.
Anderida is now therefore the name of our recording artist’s collective. The core members of the collective are: Jake, Graham, Marcus and Nick, as well as their close recording and musical associates over the years, like Nick Weekes (itsfromat; thismachine; Warrior Squares).
We have have had the privilege to work with many, varied, and great musicians since we all started back in Anderida; it’s now our aim to share the music of local artisans like these with Anderidan audiences via our label Kent & Sussex Records.
We also want to teach young Anderidans about the inclusive art of improvised drums, bass and guitar music by ear through music workshops across the region, and to help anyone musical to be freely creative; through therapy we aim to extend the joy of musical improvisation to ALL.
Those original seeds sown in the early days have now fully taken root and The Anderida Collective is flourishing.
